Carlos Vargas nació un 27 de septiembre de 1959 en San José, Costa Rica y ha trabajado con mecates por más de 30 años. También ha trabajado la escultura y la cerámica, pero la Cabuya ha sido su principal pasión. Para Carlos "este noble material pertences a nuestro folklore" el cual es el origen de la técnica que él utiliza.
"Cuando empecé a hacer nudos lo hice con la técnica del macramé, luego descubrí la Cabuya y luego instalé mi propio taller.
Para realizar sus diseños originales, este artista artesano utiliza mezclas de materiales como cerámica, cuero y alguna veces jícaras.
Utilizando un Cuchillo de palo para tensar las telas que teje él se define a sí mismo como atado a los ancestros, pero siempre innnovendo en colores y diseños.
"Trato de no hacer nunca dos artículos iguales", siempre innovando en sus diseños y no en la técnica. " Se puede hacer artesanía utilitaria y artística al mismo tiempo" afirma.

“When I started to make knots – the macramé technique - I discover the CABUYA and then I installed my own studio.”
In order to make the original designs, this craftsman likes to mix the material with ceramics, leather, and even some jicaras.
While he uses a stick knife to give shape to the fabric, he defines himself as attached to our ancestors, without being chauvinist because he likes to innovate in color and design.
“I try not to make two articles alike” he says. His tendency is the renovation of designs, not the technique. “You can make useful and artistic hand craft at the same time,” he affirms.
